Lanolin is a German term coined from the Latin word “lana” to mean wool and “Oleo” meaning oil.
It is taken from the wool in sheep. It is extracted by squeezing the harvested wool in between rollers; it is then washed in hot water with a special wool scouring detergent to remove anything stuck to the wool. This process results in a wax like substance. Although the lanolin that is typically used is obtained from sheep it can also be taken from any wool producing animal. Given its waterproof property Lanolin helps protect the body from the harsh effects of the environment. Using products that contain Lanolin guarantees the ultimate skin protection. It is a natural gift and has been tested, tried and used for years as a skin care product in the beauty and cosmetic industry.
Lanolin can be used for many purposes; most breastfeeding mothers use it to heal sore and cracked nipples. It can also be used to restore the waterproof ability to woolen materials like baby diapers. Some herbal traditionalists use lanolin in small amounts to restore calm to the nasal system incase of colds. Many varieties of lanolin are also used to make shaving cream, shoe polish and waxing polish.
Due to its soothing effect it is used to treat dry skin, itchy skin, diaper rash, minor burns and abrasions. The lanolin lip balm is used to heal dry, chapped lips and contains moisturizer that protects them from harm. The Lanolin cream helps nourish and protect the skin, it leaves the skin rejuvenated. Not only does it have a soothing effect it also protects the skin from bacteria by limiting its growth. Lanolin creams can be bought in pharmacies and cosmetic shops. Lanolin cream is locally produced in Australia-both in quality and quantity and it is resistant to acid and salt. Beware though; lanolin has been proven to be medically suitable for enriching the skin but the use of impure lanolin can result to an allergic skin reaction.
