How to Throw a Boomerang?

The word boomerang had become synonymous with something that returns to you. Since boomerang is meant to return to you, you should select only a true boomerang that had been properly designed. Unfortunately, majority of the boomerangs sold in Australia are not genuine ones. Hence, you have to be very careful in choosing the right boomerang.

Similarly, the place where you throw the boomerang should be an open space, preferably outdoors like a cricket or a football ground. Large halls or gyms could also be used but precaution must be taken to keep the other persons present there out of harm’s way. It is not easy to predict the path of the boomerang. Many people who throw boomerang would not be able to throw in a consistent fashion and it might hit others.

Boomerang should not be thrown in heavy winds. In general, boomerangs do not any wind to return properly but certain boomerangs might require a mind wind. Rain does not affect the returns of boomerangs but the moisture might affect your grip. It would be advisable to dry your hands before each throw. Similarly, you should wear sunscreens in extreme hot conditions.

Procedures for Throwing Boomerang

Effect of Wind

If you are a right-handed thrower, you should throw to the right side of the wind flow. The boomerang would return to the left of your body. Since each boomerang would return in different angles, it is advisable to start at 45o to 50o to the right side of the wind flow. You could slowly change the angles and experiment until you get the correct angle of throw. Certain fast catch type boomerangs should be thrown even wider, at around 90o. On the other hand, the trick catch boomerangs and MTA boomerangs should be thrown directly into the flow of the wind. The left-handed person should reverse the whole process by throwing to the left and taking the return on the right side.

Throw Elevation

The boomerang should be thrown from an eye-height, with an elevation of around 10o to the ground. This is the correct throwing angle for majority of the boomerangs but the trick catch and MTA boomerangs should be thrown with a significantly higher elevation.

Layover of Boomerangs

Normally, a small amount of layover in the range of 10o to 30o is more than enough for most boomerangs. The fast catch boomerangs would require a negative layover, while the MTA boomerangs and distance boomerangs should be thrown flat. If you provide too much layover, since it would climb very high and crash down.

Providing Spin

If you do not provide any spin to the boomerang, it would behave only like a bent stick. This is the most difficult part in learning how to throw a boomerang. Beginners should practice throwing until the boomerang rips out of your hand to get the maximum spin. If you cock the boomerang back into your hand, the spin imparted on the boomerang would be at optimum level.

Hardness of Throw

Throwing hard the boomerang is important but not as much necessary as imparting proper spin to the throw. However, you should throw hard if you wish to create any record in fast catching.

All these factors should be kept in mind and each one practiced separately until you achieve perfection in throwing. Boomerang throwing is not an easy task. It takes lot of patience, time and hard work before you become an expert boomerang thrower.

How to Avoid Errors in Boomerang Throwing?

Most of the novices throw either sidearm or across the body and even a few experienced throwers make this common mistake. If you give too much layover, it could break the boomerang when it comes crashing down and you might also get hurt. You should also avoid any cross-body movement of the arm. When the hand ends in front your opposite shoulder or outside that shoulder, it would become very difficult to judge the throwing angle in relation to the wind.

To achieve perfect in throwing, you should move your opposite foot forward when you throw, just like throwing a ball. The throwing hand should stop in front of you at eye level to get the right elevation. The wrist of the throwing hand should snap sharply to achieve the maximum spin. Finally, you should never lose sight of the boomerang and its trajectory. If you take your eyes away, there is every chance you might be hit by it or lose it completely. Practice constantly with all the above points in your mind and you would become a good boomerang thrower over time.

Tuning the Boomerang Throw

Tuning the throw of a boomerang is the only way to achieve perfection in boomerang throwing. This process could not be explained in words easily. Hence, it is better if you watch the other professional throwers closely for a fair amount of time before you understand the principles of tuning the boomerang. The trailing wing should be bent down to lower the height of the boomerang when it reaches the end of its flight. If you wish the boomerang to climb higher in the initial stages of the path, the leading wing should be bent up to your right side. If you want the boomerang to have a shorter range, the lead wing should be furnished with an extra angle of attack twist.

Study the material of the boomerang. Different materials react differently to tuning. Thicker paxolin rangs would accept larger tuning and bends but thinner paxolins and brittle plastic rangs should be imparted with milder tuning. A plywood boomerang could be slightly warmed up over a saucepan steam or in a microwave over for better tuning. Then the plywood boomerang could be bent to the desired level and held in that position for a few minutes. This allows the softened glue placed between the plys to be reset. However, this should be done with extreme caution. The only route to perfection is experimentation. It takes time to understand what would work and what would not work for you in boomerang throwing.
